- Robert E. Schoen, M.D., M.P.H. is a Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology at the University of Pittsburgh and serves as Director of Colorectal and GI Cancer Prevention and Control Research for the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute. His research interests are in evaluating screening for colorectal cancer, encouraging use of screening tests, and in developing new biomarkers for early detection of cancer. He is the chair of the colorectal subcommittee for the NCI Prostate, Lung, Colorectal and Ovarian (PLCO) Cancer screening trial, a randomized study of flexible sigmoidoscopy with over 154,000 participants. Dr. Schoen is evaluating intermediate biomarkers of colorectal cancer including endoscopic markers such as aberrant crypt foci, and serum markers based on nuclear matrix proteins.
