Interests

Mass Spectrometry, Biomarker Discovery
David E. Malehorn Ph.D., is a Research Assistant Professor in the Pathology Department of the University of Pittsburgh Medical School. Dr. Malehorn holds a Ph.D. in Microbiology from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, and his interests have progressed over twenty years through a range of prokaryotic and eucaryotic molecular biology research questions, in both academic and industrial settings. His current research focuses on the implementation and optimization of various high-throughput systems for the proteomic profiling of biofluid specimens by mass spectrometry. This biomarker discovery effort is being applied to a variety of clinical translation questions such as improved early detection or prognosis of cancer and other disease, and prediction of response to therapy. As Manager of the Clinical Proteomics Facility, Dr. Malehorn collaborates in a number of interdisciplinary and inter-institutional research teams such as the Western PA Proteomics Consortium, to diversify the analytical resources which can be applied to research projects. Dr. Malehorn also serves in capacities of new platform evaluation, instrument training, data analysis and report generation for clients.
