Outcome
The HepaCheC biomarker demonstrated some discrimination between early-stage HCC cases (N=50) and cirrhotic controls (N=50) in the EDRN Liver Rapid Reference Set. The observed AUC was 0.59 (95% CI 0.47; 0.71) and the observed sensitivity at 90% specificity was 0.28 (95% CI 0.06; 0.4). The combination of HepaCheC and log-transformed AFP, which demonstrated: AUC = 0.80 (95% CI 0.71; 0.88) and sensitivity at 90% specificity = 0.58 (95% CI 0.36; 0.76), did not improve on AFP alone, which demonstrated: AUC = 0.80 (95% CI 0.71; 0.88) and sensitivity at 90% specificity = 0.58 (95% CI 0.4; 0.76). Subsequent analysis on subsets with Alcoholic Liver Disease (15 cases; 15 controls) and Hepatitis C Virus (27 cases; 32 controls) gave qualitatively similar results.
