- Dr. Bigbee’s research activities are focused on the development and validation of cancer early detection and diagnostic molecular markers for application in cancer molecular epidemiology population-based screening and clinical research studies. To facilitate this translational cancer research, Dr. Bigbee is appointed as a Staff Investigator and Director of the Clinical Proteomics Facility in the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute (UPCI) and maintains related UPCI programmatic appointments as Leader, Molecular Biomarkers Group, Cancer Epidemiology Program, and as a member of the Head and Neck, and Lung and Thoracic Malignancies Programs. His research expertise is centered in clinical proteomics with EDRN, SPORE and additional NCI/DoD funding support to assess the diagnostic performance of lung cancer-specific protein expression profiles in serum and the use of MALDI-TOF and related mass spectrometry technologies for serum protein expression profiling analysis for early detection of breast, endometrial, head & neck, ovarian, pancreatic, and prostate cancer. Lastly, Dr. Bigbee is the Director of the UPCI Clinical Proteomics Facility, a new UPCI-supported shared resource focused on the development and application of proteomic profiling technology, including Luminex Multianalyte Profiling (LabMAP) for cancer early detection and screening and molecular diagnosis, prognosis, and classification of human tumors.
